The Rood Project – Thunder

rood-project-thunderThe Rood Project consisted of Mel Tanur (better known as Bay B Kane) and Sheryl Morrison. The duo combined for a small number of releases on White House Records and Basement Records between 1993 and 1995 and produced the focus of this post the ground breaking tune “Thunder”.

Thunder could be considered to be one of the first “Intelligent” drum and bass tracks. At the time the tune was released in 1994 the “Intelligent” drum and bass sound was in its infancy with Bukem just starting to break through. Nearly 10 minutes long the track starts with lush strings and female vox and builds before dropping  into a huge amen and heavy bass (note the sub-bass warning that came on the vinyl label to the right!) at around the 3.50 mark which continues for most of the track before fading back out again into the lush strings and female vox.

The vinyl release came with a remix of the original on the flip by Peshay titled “Peshay’s Ariel Assault Mix” which is a great take on the original. Unfortunately it is quite pricey to buy currently on Discogs (£35) but you can get the original unmixed on the The Best of Jungle Volume 2 CD compilation for £2.54!

A very underrated tune in my opinion but an utter classic and still sounds fresh today.
