I’m aware that plenty of people are not really a fan of these types of mixes, thinking they are a bit lazy or obvious. I can understand that argument to an extent – it would be easy to just mindlessly mix a bunch of tunes by the same producer.

But a lot of the producers I love were / are capable of a huge range of styles. This means you really have to have a think about your selection and the progression of your mix.

When mixing I don’t plan out tracklists, but I do make a careful consideration before selecting my next tune. This, in my opinion, is one of the most important skills in DJing; being able to make a quick decision on what will go nice with your current tune, whilst setting up your mix for the direction you wish to take it in.

There is another reason I love an all artist mix. It fits nicely with my nerdy, and maybe slightly OCD tendencies for order within my collection. If I collect Source Directs back catalogue, I want to then archive in a series of mixes (and of course, listen to it myself).

Anyway, it occurred to me I have 20+ all artist mixes already uploaded to my Soundcloud account, so it made sense to add them to a playlist.

These date back about 10 years, with several volumes celebrating some really prolific producers. I think there are five Dillinja mixes alone, five Photek mixes and three Source Direct. There are also mixes documenting the works of more contemporary producers like Breakage and dBridge, as well as old favourites of mine like The Invisible Man, Adam F, Seba, Nookie, Crystl and Omni Trio.

It’s all nice stuff anyway: scattered pianos over a punchy 808 and the prerequisite amen with short, sharp vocals chiming in over the top.
Sadly this is one that I never managed to pick up, I don’t actually think I’ve ever seen it on my travels. Not that it’s excessively rare but I doubt there were many copies sent over to the UK. It’s far more likely to turn up around Europe and, of course, most likely in Sweden.

When Law first approached me to do a mix for the Drumtrip Sessions, I knew that it would have to be a themed mix & not a theme that’s been widely done. I had a few potential ideas for themes, including a mix of D&B tunes on non D&B labels/compilations (Trace – The Beacon, Dillinja – In The Mood etc), a mix based around the various musicians and producers from other scenes who have had a brief flirtation with D&B (David Bowie – Little Wonder, Todd Terry – Blackout) but after giving it a lot of thought I decided that the best theme to go with in the end would be a mix of some lesser known D&B remixes commissioned by various labels for non D&B artists.

Around the 95-98 era, when Jungle was starting to fade away and was slowly evolving into D&B, it caused a lot of ears to prick up with interest. Artists like Goldie, Photek, 4hero, Grooverider, Peshay, Source Direct, Roni Size, Wax Doctor and many more were all putting out full albums on major labels and D&B was seen as the freshest, most exciting thing around and everybody wanted a piece of the action. Back when CD/12” singles were still selling healthy amounts you’d usually buy a tune and get the radio edit and a longer club mix as well as maybe a remixes of the original track as extras.

As soon as D&B began to get noticed, labels would hit up the bigger artists of the time for remixes to go on these singles, both to cash in on the then-current D&B hype as well as to market the original artist to a new audience. It would soon be pretty normal to go down to the record shop, browse through the CDs in the Pop/Rock/Electronic sections and see artists like Optical, Roni Size, Alex Reece, Boymerang and Krust doing remixes for a surprising wide range of artists from different scenes. Often the pairings that you never dreamed could work well (Krust remixing Korn, The Ganja Kru remixing Natalie Imbruglia) were where you’d get some of the interesting results.

I’ve become an avid CD collector over the past year or two, browsing Discogs hunting for obscure tracks that not too many heads might have heard before, and now that I’m starting to run out of official compilations and artist albums to buy, I’ve started to make a move to buying up remix albums and CD singles which have D&B remixes on them. Many of these are available at absolute bargain prices; very few of them turn up in mixes or tracklistings elsewhere and some of them are pretty bloody obscure. It took me a long while to gather up enough material for this mix, so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed compiling it.

But you you can trace his career back further than that. Prior to his GLO excursions he was a member of a fledgling production outfit called Peanut Planet back in his home country of Sweden. Peanut Planet were Seba, Lo-Tek and MC Sandor.

Peanut Planet appeared to be very much influenced by the jungle explosion in the UK, with their tracks paying musical homage to producers such as Omni Trio and Goldie. They ended up releasing a handful of records on trance and jungle label Fluid. The highlight of these productions was probably Awakenings which had a music video that saw MTV Europe airplay.

In 1996 Seba started a fruitful relationship with the Good Looking organisation, releasing several breathtaking singles and contributing to a few albums until a less than admirable split from the label (along with other artists) around 1999.
Highlights of this period include So Long, Valley Of The Moomins, Soul 2000 and the incredible Planetary Funk Alert, the latter being a tune that really changed my perceptions of what Drum and Bass was when I first heard it back in 1999.

He then formed a great partnership with Paradox which led to a slew of singles across their own imprints as well as releasing on heavyweight labels like Metalheadz, Hospital and 31 Records.

A true legend of the scene no doubt.

This mix features on his work between 1996 and 1998. Included are some of his tracks as Peanut Planet, as well as some of his lesser known remix work in his native Sweden. Expect some tough beats and basslines alongside dreamy and atmospheric synths and keys.

The track, initially released on Goodlooking Records in 1996, was the B side of Sonic Winds. Although Sonic Winds is an absolutely stunning track, for myself and many others that share my taste in music, So Long was really the highlight of the release.
Starting off with the “so long…” vocal sample that resonates throughout the track, the smooth pads and  gentle keys are slowly combined with a seemingly dry set of breaks.
Layers are added in typical Seba fashion, and then the amen break hits. Once you get to the second drop, the track takes a deeper turn when more pronounced keys are added, and that is what sealed this tune as one of my personal all time favorites.

The track is available on multiple releases on different formats, but the vinyl is still a prized possession to be had.
