I was listening to some Doc Scott and Kemistry/Storm mixes the other day (Mixmag and One in the Jungle) and it inspired me to have a dig for the kind of mid to late 90s tunes which were rated highly at the time but never surfaced much. Stuff you generally didn’t hear in a club and had to seek out unless you were lucky enough to live near Hoxton Square.

I was at Bournemouth Uni at the time and only managed a few trips up to Speed and the Bluenote but the guys from Fat Trax Records and their associates managed to get the big names down once a month or so. Luckily for me, they preferred the deeper styles so it was usually the likes of the DJs above along with DJ Lee and Peshay etc who would turn up at the weekend.

What I liked most about these guys style was the way they rolled out the mixes and showcased a wide range of moods and sounds across their sets. Always fresh and taking the path less travelled.

I think most of these tracks are around the 95-97 years. There’s some heavy bangers (Spirit – Fathoms), some deepness (Oblivion – Last Dance) and some all out technical masterpieces (Hidden Agenda – Dispatch 1). Don’t think I’ve heard an amen squashed, compressed and twisted like that before or since. Hope you enjoy the mix.

The Facebook group recently grew to over 700 like minded members, so to celebrate Maph has put together “Beautifully Crafted Jungle Volume 1”. The first of what will hopefully be a regular mix series from Beautiful Crated Jungle’s affiliates and members.

James Lavelle’s seminal label Mo Wax has been responsible for quite a few jungle drum and bass tracks over the years. Especially in the mid 90s when drum & bass was at it’s creative height, it fitted nicely into the label’s eclectic discography.

Source Direct, Dillinja and J Majik were all responsible for productions and remixes, as was D&B stalwart Peshay. Today’s ‘Tune Of The Day’ comes on one of the labels sister imprints ‘Mo Wax Excursions‘.

This release was by DJ Solo, the same DJ Solo of Production House when creating hardcore / jungle crossovers like ‘Darkage‘. Coming on the flipside to the original mix of ‘Pressure’, Peshay brings brutal remix to the table full of filtered amens edits, stuttering flutes and heavy subs. It’s definitely reminiscent to Peshay’s excellent remix of Rob D’s ‘Clubbed To Death‘ which was released the year before.

Plenty of european sellers on Discogs from just £1 and a few in the UK for £2. Bargain.

When Law first approached me to do a mix for the Drumtrip Sessions, I knew that it would have to be a themed mix & not a theme that’s been widely done. I had a few potential ideas for themes, including a mix of D&B tunes on non D&B labels/compilations (Trace – The Beacon, Dillinja – In The Mood etc), a mix based around the various musicians and producers from other scenes who have had a brief flirtation with D&B (David Bowie – Little Wonder, Todd Terry – Blackout) but after giving it a lot of thought I decided that the best theme to go with in the end would be a mix of some lesser known D&B remixes commissioned by various labels for non D&B artists.

Around the 95-98 era, when Jungle was starting to fade away and was slowly evolving into D&B, it caused a lot of ears to prick up with interest. Artists like Goldie, Photek, 4hero, Grooverider, Peshay, Source Direct, Roni Size, Wax Doctor and many more were all putting out full albums on major labels and D&B was seen as the freshest, most exciting thing around and everybody wanted a piece of the action. Back when CD/12” singles were still selling healthy amounts you’d usually buy a tune and get the radio edit and a longer club mix as well as maybe a remixes of the original track as extras.

As soon as D&B began to get noticed, labels would hit up the bigger artists of the time for remixes to go on these singles, both to cash in on the then-current D&B hype as well as to market the original artist to a new audience. It would soon be pretty normal to go down to the record shop, browse through the CDs in the Pop/Rock/Electronic sections and see artists like Optical, Roni Size, Alex Reece, Boymerang and Krust doing remixes for a surprising wide range of artists from different scenes. Often the pairings that you never dreamed could work well (Krust remixing Korn, The Ganja Kru remixing Natalie Imbruglia) were where you’d get some of the interesting results.

I’ve become an avid CD collector over the past year or two, browsing Discogs hunting for obscure tracks that not too many heads might have heard before, and now that I’m starting to run out of official compilations and artist albums to buy, I’ve started to make a move to buying up remix albums and CD singles which have D&B remixes on them. Many of these are available at absolute bargain prices; very few of them turn up in mixes or tracklistings elsewhere and some of them are pretty bloody obscure. It took me a long while to gather up enough material for this mix, so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed compiling it.

The set comes in at just over an hour and it was a real random selection, almost picking out the first vinyl that came to hand when thrusting around in the crates and shelves, and it turned out alright.

Props to my dog who seemed to enjoy the beats and sat about licking various parts of his anatomy to the sounds of Krome and Time, Remarc, Danny Breaks and a whole heap more.

Ruby was the collaboration of singer Lesley Rankine and Mark Walk.
The duo, were originally from London, relocated to Seattle, Washington and concentrated on their trip hop / industrial styles resulting in two albums and and three remix albums.

On one of those albums Metalheadz stalwart Peshay was comissioned to remix the track Salt Water Fish.
Released in 1996 the Peshay mix might not be ground breaking but it has the ingredients we love in a remix; snippets of the original atmos and vocals, combined with cutting amen loops and sub bass. It reminds me a little of Photek’s excellent remix of Therapy? – Loose .

The track would fit nicely in any Bukem set of the time, strings aplenty and ethereal keys play out over the hectic, almost tinny amens.

The remix was released on promo with just Peshay’s work, in full on the white label on Creation records, a subsidiary of Sony music at the time.
The full length, single sided promo copy is bountiful on Discogs and can be snapped up from just £1.25 at the time of writing.
