I was listening to some Doc Scott and Kemistry/Storm mixes the other day (Mixmag and One in the Jungle) and it inspired me to have a dig for the kind of mid to late 90s tunes which were rated highly at the time but never surfaced much. Stuff you generally didn’t hear in a club and had to seek out unless you were lucky enough to live near Hoxton Square.

I was at Bournemouth Uni at the time and only managed a few trips up to Speed and the Bluenote but the guys from Fat Trax Records and their associates managed to get the big names down once a month or so. Luckily for me, they preferred the deeper styles so it was usually the likes of the DJs above along with DJ Lee and Peshay etc who would turn up at the weekend.

What I liked most about these guys style was the way they rolled out the mixes and showcased a wide range of moods and sounds across their sets. Always fresh and taking the path less travelled.

I think most of these tracks are around the 95-97 years. There’s some heavy bangers (Spirit – Fathoms), some deepness (Oblivion – Last Dance) and some all out technical masterpieces (Hidden Agenda – Dispatch 1). Don’t think I’ve heard an amen squashed, compressed and twisted like that before or since. Hope you enjoy the mix.

Starting out releasing straight up hardcore on Underground Level the trio went on to produce some awesome stuff in ’93 for Rugged Vinyl. By the time the mid-90s came around their sound had mellowed a bit and much of their later output was for Bukem’s Good Looking label.

The Sax Lick was released on Way Out Records in ’96 and is a great example of a tune that proves that you can have a catchy melody and laid back pads while still keeping people moving. As a side note the label also saw the first release from Blu Mar Ten who went on to release loads of tracks on Good Looking and are still going now.

Beau Thomas of Intense may be recognisable to people who have looked in the run out grooves of their records as he is/was one of the mastering engineers at Masterpiece and has worked on hundreds of tunes over the years. Check for “Beau @ Masterpiece” on your vinyl, Discogs lists over 1,000 credits although I bet there are many missing from the list.

Too’z Up was the playground for the equally underrated producers Sub Sequence who, with a little help from Intense, created a slew of smart, forward thinking jungle releases from 1994 to 1996.

Sub Sequence were a duo comprised of Walter Coelho and Shane McEnhill, whose career paths took a similar turn post-Sub Sequence as they went on to become prolific mastering engineers for Masterpiece and Finyl Tweek respectively.

The mix features all their work on the label including appearances from Intense and Matt Quinn; aka the legendary Optical who made a couple of early appearances under the alias of Area 39. Personal favourites of mine include the unique opener by Intense; “Ecstatic”, and Sub Sequence’s own “Music Is The Vibe.

We have also tagged this mix under our Bargain Jungle category as you can pick most of these tunes up on Discogs for just a couple of quid.

“There was a period (roughly) between 1993 to 96 where jungle was not only atmospheric or dark, but it had an other worldly, sci-fi feel. Labels like Deejay, Lucky Spin, Legend, Timeless, Rugged Vinyl and others captured this spacey, blissed-out vibe. A quality that now seems more or less extinct within the contemporary drum and bass scene.

I tried to select tunes for this mix that represent the broad spectrum of this sound. With brooding, dark tracks like ‘Fury’ and ‘Genesis Project’ to the more calming, deep sounds of ‘Intalect’ and ‘Traveling Pt 2’.

There is a feeling of nervous mystery and wonder to these tunes, as if they could be the soundtrack to that part of a sci-fi film where the human protagonists discover a new world, a mystery accelerated by the fact that these sounds now only exist in the past.”
