Pete from one of our favourite blogs (and part inspiration for Drumtrip itself) blog to the oldskool is now taking orders for his 8205 Recordings label’s third vinyl release. Wicked jungle uncovered from the 90s vaults. A word from Pete…

Happy to announce my label’s new release is up for preorder now! Two unreleased tracks from the 90’s, one from 97 (played by Bukem, Gachet and Subject 13 back then) and one from 95 (meant for Justice’s label but shelved back then).

Preorders are up at http://8205.bandcamp.com, and will be shipping from the UK hopefully some time before the release date. Even though the record is shipping from the UK, we’ve managed to keep shipping costs low even for people in the US and elsewhere (about $6.50 for 1 copy, vs the $15-18 I usually get charged on discogs).

Limited to 300 copies, slick full cover art by Keith Rankin (Giant Claw), Mastering by Beau Thomas, etc . Hope people dig it!

Don’t miss out: order at 8205.bandcamp.com

I don’t usually promote new releases, but as you can tell, I have an vested interest in this one.

Back in 2009 I launched a label called “Repertoire” which had several digital releases and a single vinyl release. The mantra for the label was simple; contemporary jungle for the modern age.

Fast forward to 2015 and a good friend of mine Ben CT now manages the label and has signed some great tracks since then, from the likes of Okee, Probe-One, 6IX and Charlie Turbo & Mpathy.

Due to demand, we are running a very limited press of two of the most popular tracks released on the label so far.

“Something Special” is a track by myself, originally written around 2008,. It features a crisp and clean think break backed up with sombre piano keys and strings, aided by a big amen second drop.

The flip side “Voyage” is a tune by Probe-One, Probe-One are two brothers who have been making D&B for well over a decade, having already released tracks via Covert Operations and Warm Communications. Their production values are extremely high, and for some mad reason “Voyage” never found a home on a label until Repertoire picked it up. A beautifully intense amen tune, with support from ASC and LTJ Bukem.

A word from Ben CT on the release…

Pre-orders are up for The Law – Something Special / Probe-One – Voyage. If pre-orders reach 50 I will press 100 white labels via curved pressings otherwise they will be vinyl dubplates. Either way they will be hand stamped and numbered. Delivery will be approximately 6 weeks. Purchase includes download of Voyage mastered by Bob Macc.

This is very much a DIY crowd funded project. There is no money to be made here, and the release can’t go ahead with your support.

Whilst the dubplate may be more a symbol of the past in these digital times, anyone into D&B for 10+ years will probably remember waiting for months on end for that tune, they heard on the radio or in a rave, to be finally released on wax.

Unfortunately some tunes never even made it to vinyl. DATs were lost, tunes were shelved due to sample clearance issues, or sometimes plain old red tape (or perhaps ineptitude) was responsible for some fantastic tracks being lost.

The tunes in this selection are a mixture of dubplates and test presses ripped to mp3, and tunes only ever released on CD or on compilations.

There are also a couple of remakes in here. A remake, in this context, is a lost tune that has been painstakingly remade sample by sample by a few extraordinarily dedicated fans.

Big shouts to everyone who has sent me one of their tracks (released or unreleased) over the years, and all the remake community!

Tracklist:

01. DJ Trace – Definition Of Living
02. The Invisible Man – The Journey
03. The Undergraduates – Space (The Dark Remix)
04. Droppin’ Science – Volume 1 (94 Mix)
05. Wax Doctor – The Saint (Dubplate Mix)
07. Photek – Say It
08. J Majik – Your Sound (Digital & Photek VIP)
09. Dillinja – Baby Your
10. Doctor G – Bassface
11. Dillinja – Lion Heart VIP
12. System X – Mind Games (95 VIP)
13. Roger Johnson – Crazy Day Dreams
14. Photek – Feeling Up
15. The Undergraduates – Into Da Future (Droppin’ Science Remix)
16. Dillinja – In My Soul
17. The Invisible Man – Drifting

Whilst some of the above tracks have been sent to me in good faith, meaning I cannot redistribute them, there are a couple in the mix that are commercially available, or were free giveaways.

DJ Trace – Definition Of Living
This is not the much fabled amen version that Bukem played on his Yaman vol 11 tape. But, this mix is every bit as good in my opinion. It eventually appeared in 1995 on a compilation called Jungle Bizznizz Vol 1, along with a bunch of other Lucky Spin / Dee Jay related tracks. DJ Trace put this version up for free download on his Soundcloud account a few months back. Get it here.

Droppin Science – Volume 1 (94 Mix)
Danny Breaks thankfully included this gem on his retrospective LP entitled Vaultron, released earlier this year. Buy it here.

Dillinja – Follow Me
Vintage 95 Dillinja with a big amen second drop! Who knows why this never saw a proper release? However, it was included on a Hard Leaders 7 – Jungle Dub 3. Get it on crispy CD and on a sickly 3-tracks-a-side vinyl release.

Photek – Say It
One side of perhaps one of the most well known shelved records ever in jungle. Originally due to be the sixth release on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint, for some reason it never happened. The A side ‘One Nation’ was eventually release by Photek on his LP Form & Function 2.
PRO 006 only ever made it to test press, with a rumoured 10 copies in existence. The B side, Say It, eventually came to light when an extremely generous collector ripped his copy of the test press and shared both One Nation and Say It – get it here.

J Majik – Your Sound (Digital & Photek VIP)
This one remained dormant for years before arguably jungle’s greatest dubplate collector, DJ Harmony (of Moving Shadow and Lucky Spin fame) kindly ripped his dubplate to mp3 and shared it via his Soundcloud account. It doesn’t seem to be online anymore but I’m sure it’s floating around the web somewhere…

Dillinja – Baby Your
Another track released only on a compilation. Apparently ‘Baby Your’ was destined to be released on Dillinja’s ‘Logic’ recordings. But for reasons unknown, it never happened. You can get the full version on CD on “Drum and Bass Selection 4 – Reload (Running It Red)”

The Invisible Man – Drifting
If you are a regular Drumtrip reader you probably know all about this one. This amen workout from 1995 is included on Drumtrip’s debut vinyl release. Unfortunately the release was first hit by a staggering pressing delay at the plant in France, and was then found faulty when finally pressed and delivered to us. More on the saga / debacle here.

If you know of any other (nice and legal) dubplates that have been shared online, drop us a comment below!

The debut release, 8205-001, is a pair of old Mixrace tunes from 94/94 that never saw the light of day.

The EP features three previously unreleased tracks from The Invisible Man’s archives, ranging from 1993 to 1996.

It will be released on transparent dark blue speckled vinyl! Priced at £11.00 + P&P.

Sold Out!*

*Over 200 sold in under two days. The vinyl will be going to press shortly. We may be able to press a little extra, and if we do, those will be on sale as and when we receive them (no reserve / pre-orders). Stay tuned to Drumtrip for further news. Also we must send a huge thanks to everyone that ordered, it was a staggering response from you guys

A) Sunburst (Amen’s Last Stand) feat Ally [1996]

As the title suggest, a huge amen number. This was originally produced in 1996 as part of a sadly shelved album project. The track features intense vocals courtesy of Ally. Absolutely epic.

AA1) Drifting [1995]

A smooth amen workout which wouldn’t sound out of place in a 1995 LTJ Bukem set. Reminiscent of The Flute Tune, eventually released on Sublogic Recordings.

AA2) Laid Back [1993]

The earliest of the three, this straddles the line between hardcore and jungle like The Invisible Man did so well. Laid Back could have easily ended up on Timeless Recordings back in 1993. Rolling beats, amen cuts and a trademark piano melody.

Bonus Stuff!

The vinyl will also feature a locked groove and some classic Invisibreakbeats to mix with. Plus, every single order will come with a unique link to a five unreleased Invisible Man tunes on MP3.

These tunes are mixture of jungle / D&B and more experimental production. There are 13 tracks to choose from, and this is where we need your help. When you place your pre order you will receive a special link in the confirmation email, the link will lead to a page where you be asked to vote for your 5 favourites out of 13 – yep, that’s 13 more unreleased tracks – but only 5 will reach the MP3 pack.

When you visit the page you will be asked to listen to the sound clips and vote for your 5 favourites, then when the vinyl is ready to be mailed out the votes will be counted and the most popular 5 will be waiting for you on the download page. On the page you will also find a zip file containing samples from an early Invisible Man tune for those brave enough to tackle a remix.

Important Notes

Due to the fine margins and the costs involved in this release, the vinyl will not go to press until we have achieved 50 pre-orders. Once gone to press, we anticipate a turnaround of about 4-6 weeks.

As a thank you for supporting this project, the first 50 people to order will get a shout out printed on the vinyl sleeve!

For now these tunes are vinyl only but may see an MP3 release in the future – If so, all buyers of the vinyl will receive a link to the MP3s at no extra cost.

I guess this one might not really class as a tune of the day as you can’t buy it unfortunately, but this track is absolute pure quality.

Thankfully nothing to do with 2Unlimited (although maybe that’s where the vocal sample came from) this is a classic dark stepper from 1993.

It’s pretty sinister at times with a lazy mentasm breakdown but the lush strings and pads shine through in several places. Despite sadly never seeing a proper release (only surfaced on plate), scant information and rumour has it that it was supposed to come out on Reinforced Records.

I’ve only ever heard it twice – once on a Fabio Dance Planet mix and then on a Doc Scott tape. I suspect it’s probably a Goldie or Manix tune but there’s also some big similarities with the Energy track that Goldie and A Guy Called Gerald did as the 2 G’$ on Juicebox (especially the drums). Maybe a collaboration…

Who knows. Either way it’s a storming tune and epitomises that deadly R Sound from back then – tough, futuristic music.
