“Searching” is a cut from renowned Japanese DJ Nobukazu Takemura’s debut album “Childs View“. The original mix of “Searching” is a downtempo acid jazz piece released on the LP in 1994.

Released on a Childs View remix EP in the same year, Roni Size and Die’s remix strips it down and takes just a few choice samples, including the bulk of the vocals. The vocals combined with some tough but simple break beats, deep sub bass and mournful melody serve to turn the track from upbeat to a quite somber, almost introspective affair.

I found this one not via YouTube or Discogs, but actually whilst on a mammoth three hour crate dig at Haggle Vinyl in Islington. As well as three hours, it also cost me dusty fingers, a few paper cuts and crippling back pain thanks to rooting through so many piles of tunes on the floor, but I managed to come away with this and eight other nice jungle finds for 50 pence a piece!

You can save yourself that bother though and grab it on Discogs now from just £2.00! The EP also features a few other nice remixes from the Child’s View album from the likes of Cold Cut, Wagon Christ and Mad Professor.

Jungle in 1995 was a complex beast, it demanded you to stick your head down, soak up the bassline and occasionally flick your lighter. This certainly wasn’t the era of smiley faces and putting your hands in the air, although strangely enough, it was one of the most united and atmospheric.

Before anyone could demand a third or fourth reload on Leviticus’ ‘Burial’ a flood of hard stepping rough came flooding in from the likes of DJ Rap, Dillinja and Krome & Time.

By 1996 producers creativity was at an all time high and the sound as we knew it was due for a massive upheaval, mainly driven by the likes of Shy FX, Congo Natty, Aphrodite and DJ Red.

This was the unmistaken sound of jump up drum & bass, a sound that took elements from the past, combined with a slightly increased bmp, rubberised basslines and hip hop samples. It was also the rebirth of the ‘feel good factor’ and although many junglists took an instant dislike to certain producers efforts it really did take over the scene for sometime.

Rather than opting for the obvious classics of the era, the Drum & Bass Arena forum have delved deep into their record collection and pulled out a collection of diverse tracks that portray the time period in a totally different light altogether.

Flicking through my vinyl over Christmas I picked out a few time honoured tracks that epitomise the tough rolling style showcased by DJs like Kemistry & Storm and Randall etc around 1995.

As the turkey was still defrosting I decided to knock up a quick mini-mix. Deep amen tracks like these bridged the widening gap between the Good Looking crew’s increasingly delicate output and the darker techstep sound that was just starting to emerge at this time from Trace and Doc Scott etc.

1995 was easily one of my favourite years for the music and tunes like this will never lose the ability to stop me dead in my tracks. The samples, drum programming and production were all on top form and the hardware based studios had ‘that’ sound I don’t quite hear anymore with software. Stakka and K-Tee in particular were running it with Ant Miles and DJ Harmony was killing it with tracks like Serious.

I was first introduced to pirate radio in 1991, and it played a huge role in shaping my musical tastes.
Being a kid too young at the time to go out raving, I would spend hours at home or at friends’ houses listening to stations like Kool, Weekend Rush, Defection, Eruption and Pulse, and record them to tape on a Musical Fidelity “music centre” similar to the one pictured below – not much to look at but it had an excellent pause button (anyone who used to record off radio will know how important this is).

I was also buying vinyl and playing it on this thing. It received the FM signal through a piano string instead of an aerial, which actually worked quite well!

After I went through a couple more questionable “Hi-Fi’s” (and I use that term very loosely), by 1994 I eventually moved on to a decent NAD amp and tape deck, Technics tuner and an old pair of Celestion Ditton 15 speakers. A year later I also picked up an SL1510 and a Pro 150 (hold tight DJ Jamie, I feel your pain) which was a barely useable combo, so went on to buy my SL1200s not long afterwards, that I still have to this day.

Unfortunately I would often re-record over sets or shows after I got bored of after listening to them over and over on the way to/from/in school or whatever, unaware of how much I’d want to have them back to listen to a few years down the line. I do still have a couple of my favourite ones left though.

The Mix…. 

So this set is based around tunes from the 93-94 era (with one from 92 thrown in that was way ahead of its time) that were big pirate radio favourites of mine, tunes that instantly make me think of a particular station, DJ/MC, tape, time or place the second I hear that breakdown. Basically tunes that had a positive impact on me, that I went out and bought because of pirate radio.

I have spliced in little sections of some of my old recordings (mainly Kool FM ones) that I happen to have ripped and saved on my computer – I tried not to go overboard with this, but did include some slightly longer memorable clips, like the infamous “Duffer Paul” reload, Kool FM NYE 94 into 95, which friends and me creased up over many times.

A lot of these tunes are not heard so much these days compared to the bigger anthems (many of which owe their success to stations like Kool and Rush), some are a bit rough around the edges and some were overshadowed by a monster of an anthem on the flipside (Renegade’s Something I Feel for example).

I purposefully didn’t play tracks by the same artist or on the same label more than once to try and get a nice cross-section of music in there, but it was very tough to leave some out, especially when flicking through the Reinforced back cat from this era. Also, I didn’t want to repeat tunes that already feature in previous mixes of mine such as “Just About Jungle”, which is packed with a lot of my old pirate favourites.

It is a pleasure to be able to launch the Sessions with a mix by DJextreme. Extreme is responsible for countless jungle mixes spanning the whole spectrum of the genre, often posted on his own blog Hardscore.
It was one of his mixes that really got me into Dillinja’s (slightly) lesser known early productions and remixes, being a huge fan himself.

For this mix he has raided the archives and supplied a deep selection, even including a Dillinja tune I haven’t even heard of! Here’s a few words by the man himself…

This mix began with one record; The Doc Scott Interstate Remix on Butterfly. From here the other tracks fell nicely into place mainly consisting of 1996 beats running with similar styles.

Producers include the likes of J Majik, Photek, Arteq (Optical), Phume (Klute Collaboration), Source Direct, Hidden Agenda plus one of my all time favourites ‘Astrology‘ by Danny Breaks on Droppin’ Science.

Ending with a nice Dillinja track, This is taken from the Japanese import version of R&S Records ‘In order to Dance‘ session one album.
