A mix I’ve been trying to get Drumtrip Radio stalwart Brian Badonde to record for quite some time this.

Dillinja really started to flourish and become a staple of the jungle/drum and bass scene in 1994, and by 1997 it was fair to say he was one of the undisputed masters of the genre. This mix however takes us through his early pre-1994 days, when his productions had more of a hardcore flavour to them – the production skills may not have been fully honed yet, but the vibe was certainly there.

The common factor with all these 1993 tunes, regardless of what label they were on (Target, Waveform, Cybotron etc) nearly all had a catalogue number #DILL in common. Here’s a few words on the mix by Brian…

I’ve been meaning to do this mix for over a year now since I finally tracked down my last needed bit of DILL on wax. This is early, dark, blueprint, prototype Dillinja business from 1993… a far cry from his subsequent jungle works but instantly recognisable as his given the signatory big breaks, loud production and low hard hitting basslines.

It does make me shed a jungle tear when I hear his current production compared to this, the beginnings of his golden era masterworks. For the keen of ear and eye, you will spot KARL 001 at the end. This should have been a DILL press in my opinion and I couldn’t sign off a mix such as this, without including it.

This little lot was tough going to mix, so enjoy (and don’t look at the current prices that records are being punted for.

True enough – I was keen to do this mix myself but I’m missing a few and some of these tunes, such as the Cybotron and Waveform tracks, go for silly money on Discogs now days.

Anyway, enjoy.

If you’ve been following Drumtrip you’ll know I have knocked up a fair few all artist mixes over the years.

I’m aware that plenty of people are not really a fan of these types of mixes, thinking they are a bit lazy or obvious. I can understand that argument to an extent – it would be easy to just mindlessly mix a bunch of tunes by the same producer.

But a lot of the producers I love were / are capable of a huge range of styles. This means you really have to have a think about your selection and the progression of your mix.

When mixing I don’t plan out tracklists, but I do make a careful consideration before selecting my next tune. This, in my opinion, is one of the most important skills in DJing; being able to make a quick decision on what will go nice with your current tune, whilst setting up your mix for the direction you wish to take it in.

There is another reason I love an all artist mix. It fits nicely with my nerdy, and maybe slightly OCD tendencies for order within my collection. If I collect Source Directs back catalogue, I want to then archive in a series of mixes (and of course, listen to it myself).

Anyway, it occurred to me I have 20+ all artist mixes already uploaded to my Soundcloud account, so it made sense to add them to a playlist.

These date back about 10 years, with several volumes celebrating some really prolific producers. I think there are five Dillinja mixes alone, five Photek mixes and three Source Direct. There are also mixes documenting the works of more contemporary producers like Breakage and dBridge, as well as old favourites of mine like The Invisible Man, Adam F, Seba, Nookie, Crystl and Omni Trio.

Tracklists each mix can can be found within the description of the relevant Soundcloud page.

Whilst the dubplate may be more a symbol of the past in these digital times, anyone into D&B for 10+ years will probably remember waiting for months on end for that tune, they heard on the radio or in a rave, to be finally released on wax.

Unfortunately some tunes never even made it to vinyl. DATs were lost, tunes were shelved due to sample clearance issues, or sometimes plain old red tape (or perhaps ineptitude) was responsible for some fantastic tracks being lost.

The tunes in this selection are a mixture of dubplates and test presses ripped to mp3, and tunes only ever released on CD or on compilations.

There are also a couple of remakes in here. A remake, in this context, is a lost tune that has been painstakingly remade sample by sample by a few extraordinarily dedicated fans.

Big shouts to everyone who has sent me one of their tracks (released or unreleased) over the years, and all the remake community!

Tracklist:

15. The Undergraduates – Into Da Future (Droppin’ Science Remix)
16. Dillinja – In My Soul
17. The Invisible Man – Drifting

Whilst some of the above tracks have been sent to me in good faith, meaning I cannot redistribute them, there are a couple in the mix that are commercially available, or were free giveaways.

DJ Trace – Definition Of Living
This is not the much fabled amen version that Bukem played on his Yaman vol 11 tape. But, this mix is every bit as good in my opinion. It eventually appeared in 1995 on a compilation called Jungle Bizznizz Vol 1, along with a bunch of other Lucky Spin / Dee Jay related tracks. DJ Trace put this version up for free download on his Soundcloud account a few months back. Get it here.

Droppin Science – Volume 1 (94 Mix)
Danny Breaks thankfully included this gem on his retrospective LP entitled Vaultron, released earlier this year. Buy it here.

Dillinja – Follow Me
Vintage 95 Dillinja with a big amen second drop! Who knows why this never saw a proper release? However, it was included on a Hard Leaders 7 – Jungle Dub 3. Get it on crispy CD and on a sickly 3-tracks-a-side vinyl release.

Photek – Say It
One side of perhaps one of the most well known shelved records ever in jungle. Originally due to be the sixth release on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint, for some reason it never happened. The A side ‘One Nation’ was eventually release by Photek on his LP Form & Function 2.
PRO 006 only ever made it to test press, with a rumoured 10 copies in existence. The B side, Say It, eventually came to light when an extremely generous collector ripped his copy of the test press and shared both One Nation and Say It – get it here.

J Majik – Your Sound (Digital & Photek VIP)
This one remained dormant for years before arguably jungle’s greatest dubplate collector, DJ Harmony (of Moving Shadow and Lucky Spin fame) kindly ripped his dubplate to mp3 and shared it via his Soundcloud account. It doesn’t seem to be online anymore but I’m sure it’s floating around the web somewhere…

Dillinja – Baby Your
Another track released only on a compilation. Apparently ‘Baby Your’ was destined to be released on Dillinja’s ‘Logic’ recordings. But for reasons unknown, it never happened. You can get the full version on CD on “Drum and Bass Selection 4 – Reload (Running It Red)”

The Invisible Man – Drifting
If you are a regular Drumtrip reader you probably know all about this one. This amen workout from 1995 is included on Drumtrip’s debut vinyl release. Unfortunately the release was first hit by a staggering pressing delay at the plant in France, and was then found faulty when finally pressed and delivered to us. More on the saga / debacle here.

If you know of any other (nice and legal) dubplates that have been shared online, drop us a comment below!

There are some real gems in here such as a remake of the unreleased Tango & Fallout track “Revelations”, an unreleased Dillinja dubplate “Baby Your”, and the almost mythical Photek track “Feeling Up”.

A word from Jam One himself…

Just a little mix of unreleased jungle tunes and VIP’s from cd albums and re-makes.

I know some technically came out but they are not that easy to get. Also please do not ask me for any tunes as I have been ordered to guard some of these with my life.
Big up to the Re-make community out there!

A selection from 1993 right up until Dillinja’s debut album “Cybotron” in 2001.

It turns out I had more than enough tunes and managed to squeeze in 25 tracks spanning 8 years of Dillinja’s prolific career. As such the mixing is swift and a bit haphazard in places.

A few personal favourites includes a late slice of hardcore under the name ‘Underworld’; produced by Dillinja alongside Mr E and Kenny Charles AKA Defender, the Suburban Knights alias for the track ‘As It Grooves’, and an underrated vocal workout that rounds off the mix called ‘Together’, taken from the Cybotron LP.
