Hi everyone, it’s been a while. I come with gifts (well for two of you at least).

The guys at Soundcrash are putting on an event not to be missed: The legendary Fabio and Bukem are laying down 5 hour Speed-era sets at the O2 Forum, Kentish Town.

Back in summer last year these two put on a Speed night at XOYO and it’ll live long in the memory of those who were in attendance. To this day I get flashbacks of Bukem reloading FBD Project’s “Journeys” and taking it right back to the edge, as to play it in it’s full glory.

So, we got a pair of tickets to give away thanks to the Soundcrash crew.

Win a pair of tickets

To win a pair of tickets to LTJ Bukem + Fabio @ O2 Forum Kentish Town on Saturday 28th April 2018, just answer the following question in the comments section below…

What is your favourite track on Bukem’s Good Looking or Fabio’s Creative Source, and why?

The winner will be the most interesting / creative / funny answer (determined by myself and my cohorts).

Winner will be announced on Monday 4th December.

In the meantime you can get early tickets at: http://www.soundcrashmusic.com/bukem-x-fabio/

Yet another in my series of all artist mixes, this one takes you through the work of a pair of seriously underrated producers; Hidden Agenda.

The jungle revival is in full swing right now – Source Direct and Photek tunes are changing hands for eye watering sums of money, and similar producers of the era being lorded as genre defining visionaries… rightly so in most cases. But for some reason you don’t quite hear as much praise for Hidden Agenda, and for me personally, these two brothers (Mark and Jason Goodings) were every bit as talented.

I won’t launch into a huge article on Hidden Agenda, because my mate Spyros over at God Is No Longer a DJ already did, and did it way better than I probably could. Check out his piece on “Whatever happened to Hidden Agenda“.

However, from a personal perspective I will say; I cannot think of another artist in the history of the drum and bass scene who could work a sample like these guys. They’d take samples, often dozens, from all over the musical landscape, and somehow fit them into a track and make them sound like they were made for each other.

From their jazzy / rare-groove twinged early efforts on Metalheadz, their deep and soulful Creative Source sound, or the paranoid noir jazz of their 1996/97 outings, Hidden Agenda could do it all. They even turned their hand to some pretty nasty tech step (see their remix of Sirens for evidence).

This mix takes you through the majority of their work from 1995 to 1999, including a couple of remixes.

It has to be said, when producing I don’t think making their tunes “DJ friendly” was really top of their, err, agenda (and why should it be?). So blending these tracks was a bit of a challenge, especially as it was in one take with no planning, but generally it turned out OK, and as ever with these “all artist” mixes, it’s more about music.

We’ve been planning this one for probably about a year, and have spent most of that time tracking down the right tunes.

Finally, we can announce the project and most importantly, the sounds.

A1) Realside – Where Ya Going? [2001]
Realside are a duo you may already have heard of. They have had tracks released and featured on LTJ Bukem’s Cookin’ Records, Sirkus and Deep Rooted. One half of Realside, Dom, is also better known as Sonar Cicle, a producer who had several singles and an album release on Reinforced.
“Where Ya Going?” nearly ended up on Good Looking records back in 2001, but we’re glad it didn’t so we can finally give it a home on Repertoire.

A2) Law & Wheeler – Natural Resource [2014]
A tune about five years in the making. Started in Manchester, and finally finished in Finsbury. North London last year. Not much else to say, but no prizes for guessing which producers this is an ode to…

B1) The Invisible Man – Sonic Illusion [1996]
Originally produced in 1996, “Sonic Illusion” is an atmospheric slow burner that requires your full attention. No mad amen edits here. Deep bass, swirling synths and spaced out effects – not for the casual listener. Criminal that it was never released before now.

B2) Tim Reaper – Second Chance [2014]
If you’re reading this there’s a good chance you know all about Tim Reaper already. We’ve been sitting on this one for a good six months now. The usual blistering amen edits can be found on “Second Chance”, only with a deeper, almost melancholy, vibe, peppered with mournful male vocals. One of his best yet in my opinion.

One again, this is an entirely DIY crowd funded project. There is no money to be made here, and this release can’t go ahead with your support.

Cheers
Law

Back in 2009 I launched a label called “Repertoire” which had several digital releases and a single vinyl release. The mantra for the label was simple; contemporary jungle for the modern age.

Fast forward to 2015 and a good friend of mine Ben CT now manages the label and has signed some great tracks since then, from the likes of Okee, Probe-One, 6IX and Charlie Turbo & Mpathy.

Due to demand, we are running a very limited press of two of the most popular tracks released on the label so far.

“Something Special” is a track by myself, originally written around 2008,. It features a crisp and clean think break backed up with sombre piano keys and strings, aided by a big amen second drop.

The flip side “Voyage” is a tune by Probe-One, Probe-One are two brothers who have been making D&B for well over a decade, having already released tracks via Covert Operations and Warm Communications. Their production values are extremely high, and for some mad reason “Voyage” never found a home on a label until Repertoire picked it up. A beautifully intense amen tune, with support from ASC and LTJ Bukem.

A word from Ben CT on the release…

Pre-orders are up for The Law – Something Special / Probe-One – Voyage. If pre-orders reach 50 I will press 100 white labels via curved pressings otherwise they will be vinyl dubplates. Either way they will be hand stamped and numbered. Delivery will be approximately 6 weeks. Purchase includes download of Voyage mastered by Bob Macc.

This is very much a DIY crowd funded project. There is no money to be made here, and the release can’t go ahead with your support.

On this day in 2010, Drumtrip was launched.

I can’t quite believe five years has flown by in that time, and eerily, the very first post featured on Drumtrip was an Invisible Man track

I originally launched Drumtrip (named after the 2 Bad Mice tune) as a sandbox for learning some basic online marketing and SEO skills, as well as getting to grips with some rudimentary HTML / code. Since I was going to the effort of creating a site, I thought I might as well use it as an opportunity to write a load of nonsense about jungle. Looking back, it was a worthwhile exercise, since I now work in SEO and marketing full time.

I never expected the site to still be online in 2015, but I have really enjoyed being able to write about the music I love so much, and to be able to share that passion with others around the world. The site itself isn’t the busiest, but on an average week we’ll get well over 1,000 unique hits (with at least of half of them being new visitors). Not too bad for a hobby blog on what is really a pretty niche topic of interest.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a few shout outs to people that have helped me out…

To start, a big shout to all the contributors of the last 5 years. We’ve only had a few regulars and it’s been hard to tie you down, but every single post has been well received so thanks for your time and effort. Especially out to Tim Reaper, Haste (Roll Da Beats), Ben CT (Repertoire), Jamie (Section 23), Snakey, and Spyros (looking forward to your next essay man).

Next, big up to all the Drumtrip Radio regulars! Dave (AKA Brian Badonde AKA the Shameless Dub Hunter AKA The Richest Man In Jungle), you’ve been integral to Drumtrip Radio since the beginning mate. Nibbers (possibly the nicest guy in jungle), Ghaleon, Kola Nut, Wheeler. and all the Drumtrip Radio listeners, epecially Long Dark Tunnel, Remedee, EQ, Ed Bale, the regular crew!

Everyone who has taken the time to give an interview or record a mix. Shouts to DJ Trax, Monita, Djinn, J Rolla (what a mix!), eXtreme, Serum, Flatliner, Nick FX, Tekniq and Vapour.

And all the junglists world wide who visit the site, follow us on Soundcloud, listen to my mixes and Drumtrip Radio. All the crew at Beautifully Crafted Jungle (especially Matt, Charlie and Tom), the Rupture crew (Double O and Mantra), Pete Devnull (I was reading your blog before way before Drumtrip), everyone on the BCJ Facebook group, DNBA and Subvert forums.

Final shout to Invisible Man, who did a lot of the behind-the-scenes legwork for the Unreleased History Of… EP, been a pleasure to work with you man. And huge respect and love to everyone who pre-ordered that record, and stayed patient throughout the whole mispress saga. What a load of grief that was.

Apologies if I missed out anyone, you know who you are. I’ll leave you with this one…

Hold tight for vol 2.
