We referenced the obvious tunes such as “Dylan – Witchcraft“, “Source Direct – The Crane“, and “Decoder – Fog“. However, he did mention a tune that has stuck with me since. Shamefully I didn’t know about it, but it is the very epitome of what we were discussing.

This leads us to the tune of the day: Klute – Ram Raider, released on Certificate 18 in 1996, which was part of a 3 track vinyl. Side A has “Right Or Wrong” and the B side holding two tracks entitled “Work It Out” and, obviously, “Ram Raider”.

Ram Raider starts off with a cryptic chopped up break that is instantaneously recognizable. A heavy choppy amen gets added and the tune takes shape.
Up until then you feel that this is just another good amen track, but it deepens when the first drop hits. Some eerie pads sweep in, and suddenly the sample “The lights are on…but nobody’s home” gets added to the track.
Klute slams the amen back on and shivers go up your spine. For me, it’s darkness at it’s best. Listen below.

If anyone has more recommendations of tracks for a dark dnb/jungle mix, please post in the comments below or on Drumtrip’s facebook page.

P.S.: The tune also falls under the Bargain Jungle section, as it can be bought for a few quid on discogs. Enjoy!

Fisken). I personally know very little about the duo, however it is an interesting fact to know that Alex Moul (Moul’y) is now a pro skater, skating for none other then Flip Skateboards (click here for video). Moul’y & Lucida have several releases combined, and the one discussed today is the remixes of Inertia and Profhesy.

Their release of Inertia and Profhesy (yes, it is really incorrectly written Profhesy) was released in 1996 on Timeless Records. Although the original release of are splendid in their own right, I’d like to showcase the remixes by KMC and Shogun released in 1997. This vinyl, also released on Timeless Records, has truly struck a special chord with me. Shogun’s remix of Inertia is a combination of energetic drums, soothing strings, beautiful keys, and of course dolphin/whale vocalization (it seemed to be popular in the 90s… and I can’t blame them, it sounds great!). The track sweeps in and out of drops and is a joy to mix. The second tune is KMC’s remix of Prophesy (which is correctly written on the 1997 remix release) is similar in nature, but with a more vocal pad and upbeat bassline.

Both the original and remixes can be bought £2 to £5 :

But this is not to undermine Lo Tek, as he has partaken in many great collaborations during the 90s that have really aged well through time, including today’s TOTD.

The track, initially released on Goodlooking Records in 1996, was the B side of Sonic Winds. Although Sonic Winds is an absolutely stunning track, for myself and many others that share my taste in music, So Long was really the highlight of the release.
Starting off with the “so long…” vocal sample that resonates throughout the track, the smooth pads and gentle keys are slowly combined with a seemingly dry set of breaks.
Layers are added in typical Seba fashion, and then the amen break hits. Once you get to the second drop, the track takes a deeper turn when more pronounced keys are added, and that is what sealed this tune as one of my personal all time favorites.

The track is available on multiple releases on different formats, but the vinyl is still a prized possession to be had.

Decoder, or Darren Beale as it says on his passport was been responsible for a huge amount of hardcore, jungle and drum and bass since his early outings on Lucky Spin and Deejay Recordings.
Under aliases like Orca, Wild Orkid, Atlas and Koda he first found a niche creating that other–worldly sound made famous by Lucky Spin and his label mates, including the Beverly Craven sampling hardcore anthem 4 AM.

A major unsung hero in drum and bass he continued his work creating dark tracks under his Decoder pseudonym, frequently releasing on Mark Caro’s Tech Itch imprint..
These days he can be found as one third of chart topping trio Kosheen, comprising of radio friendly D&B, Trip-Hop and more pop influenced numbers.

Below is Decoder – Fog, released on Hardleaders in 1996, one of the darkest tunes I know. Very few people can do “dark” jungle/DnB well, however Decoder nails it almost every time.

Turn off the lights and listen.

The tune starts off with a extended intro that slowly builds up with pads and rides, which then falls into a healthy amen break that is sure to make you reminisce.

I managed to pick this one up completely by fluke, which ended up probably being one of my most interesting purchases without knowing.

As always, you can find it for a few pounds on discogs. Funky Technicians – Day By Day

DJ Trace (Duncan Hutchinson), is a name that has been around from the early beginnings of jungle. Most appreciated by me for his lush pads and interesting drum construction, Trace released a fair few pieces on wax that will stay in my record collection for ever.

Lost Entity was his first solo release on the fairly popular Lucky Spin Recordings. Being a Hardcore/Jungle label, Lucky Spin was only active for 3 years. Within that time span, they managed to deliver a quality catalogue that should not be overlooked. The original Lost Entity was released in 1993, and is, in itself, a decent release. In 1995, however, DJ Trace remixed his own tune. The result? A classic… DJ Trace – Lost Entity (Remix)

In good DJ Trace fashion, the tune has several elements, and it progresses nicely through them all. Even though it is produced at a lower bpm (around 155), the tune sounds great sped up to match the 160+ bpm which was more of the “Jungle” norm.

You can get your own copy for about £10.00 to £15.00 here. Not quite a bargain, but a must have none the less.
