The original Droppin’ Science – Vol 2 tune is a slightly weird, but awesome, piece of mid-90s jungle.

Very experimental with its crazy drum programming and strange samples, especially considering the total tear out track that it followed (Volume 1).

The EZ Rollers’ remix of “Rollin'” takes it down a more traditional route with their trademark synths, chugging beats and some nice rolling bass.

Pretty much everything these guys touched back then was wicked. They went a little too commercial for me with the Lock Stock tune but their releases on Moving Shadow back in the day are some of my favourite tracks from the so called “intelligent” genre.

Danny Breaks has just released a double CD album paying homage to the label throughout the 90s, with unreleased material on disc two. Get it now here!

The rest of the releases are well worth checking out if you’ve never heard them before.

Most are cheap to pick up and the tunes were generally prime examples of slightly more laid back, rolling jungle tunes that stepped away from the standard amen assault but still managed to get butts moving on the dancefloor.

After a few tunes around this time ST Files seemed to disappear for a little bit but returned in the 2000s teaming up with Marcus to release classic after classic on his new label Soul:R as well as some stone cold classic D&B on big labels like 31 and Metalheadz, which I’m sure need no introduction.

Starting out releasing straight up hardcore on Underground Level the trio went on to produce some awesome stuff in ’93 for Rugged Vinyl. By the time the mid-90s came around their sound had mellowed a bit and much of their later output was for Bukem’s Good Looking label.

The Sax Lick was released on Way Out Records in ’96 and is a great example of a tune that proves that you can have a catchy melody and laid back pads while still keeping people moving. As a side note the label also saw the first release from Blu Mar Ten who went on to release loads of tracks on Good Looking and are still going now.

Beau Thomas of Intense may be recognisable to people who have looked in the run out grooves of their records as he is/was one of the mastering engineers at Masterpiece and has worked on hundreds of tunes over the years. Check for “Beau @ Masterpiece” on your vinyl, Discogs lists over 1,000 credits although I bet there are many missing from the list.

Their productions were super raw and dirty jungle with hectic beats, scattered ragga samples and a smidgen of hardcore stabs and pads.

The early stuff was engineered by Potential Bad Boy, a man responsible for so many releases in the early to mid 90s.

After the jungle years both went on to write UK Garage under the names Cisko and Sovereign releasing a few good tracks on various labels, most notably Sovereign with his There U Go track on All Good Records.

This one, nicking a cheesy as you like vocal from crooners Boyz II Men, has always been a fav of mine. Tucked away on the b-side of Music For The 90s this was still played a fair bit at the time and makes this one killer 12″ if you’re into that sound.

Both tunes take loads of vocals from the G. Simone & KRS One track Music For The 90s (also sampled in P-Funk Era), which isn’t too bad a tune either!

Low Noise Block AKA Potential Bad Boy first released this on the excellent Ibiza Records back in 1991.

This remix came about in ’92 and being a bit of a sucker for a cheesy piano this one has always been my favourite of the bunch. Depeche Mode fans should also recognise certain parts of the tune too.

PBB released so many tracks back at this time it’s ridiculous. He put out loads of stuff on Ibiza as well as the related Limited E series and various others. I’ve been told over the years that he also produced for many other people and played a big part in many early hardcore tunes as well as contributing to lots of jungle releases in later years.

After going over to garage for a while he seems to be back on the D&B scene releasing some decent stuff on Ganja and his own label. A bad boy indeed.
