If you’ve been following Drumtrip you’ll know I have knocked up a fair few all artist mixes over the years.

I’m aware that plenty of people are not really a fan of these types of mixes, thinking they are a bit lazy or obvious. I can understand that argument to an extent – it would be easy to just mindlessly mix a bunch of tunes by the same producer.

But a lot of the producers I love were / are capable of a huge range of styles. This means you really have to have a think about your selection and the progression of your mix.

When mixing I don’t plan out tracklists, but I do make a careful consideration before selecting my next tune. This, in my opinion, is one of the most important skills in DJing; being able to make a quick decision on what will go nice with your current tune, whilst setting up your mix for the direction you wish to take it in.

There is another reason I love an all artist mix. It fits nicely with my nerdy, and maybe slightly OCD tendencies for order within my collection. If I collect Source Directs back catalogue, I want to then archive in a series of mixes (and of course, listen to it myself).

Anyway, it occurred to me I have 20+ all artist mixes already uploaded to my Soundcloud account, so it made sense to add them to a playlist.

These date back about 10 years, with several volumes celebrating some really prolific producers. I think there are five Dillinja mixes alone, five Photek mixes and three Source Direct. There are also mixes documenting the works of more contemporary producers like Breakage and dBridge, as well as old favourites of mine like The Invisible Man, Adam F, Seba, Nookie, Crystl and Omni Trio.

Tracklists each mix can can be found within the description of the relevant Soundcloud page.

Having recently got hold of some super exclusive unreleased Invisible Man dubplates, Brian’s debut Drumtrip show is a homage Graham Mew, a man also known as Mysteron and Doctor G.

A few of these tunes have never been played anywhere else! Look out for unreleased gems like the incredible ‘Sunburst Amens’ and the (tentatively titled) “Church Bell Tune”. Brian then rounds off the set with 20 minutes of storming jungle rarities.

Big up to Brian for a wicked show (he’ll be back soon), and of course Graham aka Invisible Man for the unreleased goodness.

Next up on Drumtrip Radio is Law; Wednesday 16th April, 8pm.

I was asked if one of my old mixes could be showcased on eclectic music blog Two Hungry Ghosts, but I thought I would go one better than that and actually create a new mix just for the site. So I did.

This happened

“There was a period (roughly) between 1993 to 96 where jungle was not only atmospheric or dark, but it had an other worldly, sci-fi feel. Labels like Deejay, Lucky Spin, Legend, Timeless, Rugged Vinyl and others captured this spacey, blissed-out vibe. A quality that now seems more or less extinct within the contemporary drum and bass scene.

I tried to select tunes for this mix that represent the broad spectrum of this sound. With brooding, dark tracks like ‘Fury’ and ‘Genesis Project’ to the more calming, deep sounds of ‘Intalect’ and ‘Traveling Pt 2’.

There is a feeling of nervous mystery and wonder to these tunes, as if they could be the soundtrack to that part of a sci-fi film where the human protagonists discover a new world, a mystery accelerated by the fact that these sounds now only exist in the past.”

02. Chuck E – Fantasy – White House
03. Mysteron – U Don’t Know – Timeless
04. D.O.P.E. – Travelling Pt 2 – Good Looking
05. DJ Monita – The Party (Remix) – Skeleton Recordings

J-Rolla has a record collection that would be the envy of pretty much anyone, I often gawp it on Discogs and try desperately to find a 12″ of mine that he doesn’t own, I rarely win.
To further reinforce this fact he often puts together splendid mixes across the hardcore, jungle, D&B spectrum as well as Dubstep and probably music you have never even heard of / doesn’t exist yet!

My point is, our James knows a bit about Jungle so you best listen to this superb mix entitled The Darker Mix.
Cramming 31 tunes in 80 minutes it pretty much shows you the best that Darkcore had to offer.

Hailing from Oxford, Graham Mew started life as a producer as Doctor G producing vintage breakbeat hardcore in 1991 and ’92.
The Invisible Man alias surfaced that year with the launch of his new label Timeless Recordings in late 1992.
The labels first release was the seminal On A Mission EP which helped laid the blueprint for the convential drum and bass sound.

Oxford was a hotbed for the ethereal, techno influenced sound with compatriots at Legend Recordings pushing a similar style with The Invisible Man often working as engineer for Q-Project and Gwange on tracks such as the anthemic Champion Sound.

Further releases on Timeless and Bukem’s Good Looking imprint concreted his status as one of the top producers and engineers on the circuit.

One of my favourite tracks of his was under the name of The Undergraduates called ‘Into Da Future‘.
It was revealed in an interview some years later, that Mew used The Undergraduates alias as the track was one of the first to use the breakbeat found on a recent issue of Future Music magazine CD after Andy C and Ant Miles made it famous on Valley Of The Shadows.
He confesses it would have been released under the ‘Invisible Man’ pseudonym if he came across the sample just a couple of weeks earlier.

To the mix….
A selection of pretty much all his work between 1992 and 1994, rolled out on vinyl and mixed by hand for your listening pleasure.
