Grooverider’s seminal label ‘Prototype’ had a huge influence on the progression of D&B in the mid 90s; from its humble beginnings in 1994 and Rider’s early work as Codename John, up until the turn of the millenium when Bad Company released the anthemic ‘Planet Dust’. But it was also as elusive as it was influential.

Unreleased Photek

If you look down the catalogue numbers for Prototype releases, you’ll notice a few are missing, in this case “PRO006”.

In 1994/1995 Photek was churning out razor sharp, amen fueled D&B by the bucket load. Around this time it looks as if the great ‘Rider signed several tracks to Prototype. The tracks in question were Feeling Up, Flavour Of A Sound, One Nation and Say It. There has been much internet discussion in the years since, but according to rumour (and rumour only) the releases might have been like so..

• PRO003 – Flavour Of A Sound / Feeling Up
• PRO006 – One Nation / Say It

If you are reading this, you probably know that neither of these release ended up in the shops for whatever reason. PRO003 never even got as far as test presses so it seems, but there are some lucky blighters out there with a few early copies of PR006.

The tune in question, Say It, is not to be confused with the Photek tune of the same name (under his System X alias) on Entity Records from 1994. Whilst I have read that some people seem to think the version on the video below is actually a 1995 mix, I can’t quite see the similarities that make this a remix – to me it seems like a stand alone tune.

One Nation did eventually see a release on Photek’s Form & Function Vol 2 LP in 2007 along with another unreleased track entitled ‘Saturated Hip Hop. But of the four tracks I listed, to this day, One Nation remains the only one ever officially released.

Sadly, it remains highly unlikely any of these will ever see the light of day as presumably the DATs are long gone. Bukem can still be caught spinning his dubs of Flavour Of A Sound / Feeling Up on occasion, but unfortunately that might be the closest we ever get to them. However, not all is lost as some generous individual, lucky enough to own a test press of PRO006, has shared WAVs of his recordings, get it while you can!

What a night this was. I remember going, hoping someone would drop a few oldskool tunes. It wasn’t advertised at all as an oldskool night, so imagine the vibes when every single DJ raided the crates for the Speed classics.

Such a line up too, LTJ Bukem, Goldie, Fabio and Grooverider, and Tayla. It’s safe to say that without those names, D&B certainly wouldn’t be what it is today, or perhaps even exist at all.

As soon as I walked through the door I could hear Tayla playing Secret Liaison, it was obviously gonna be a great night.

Being so close to Christmas it was a good atmosphere inside and you can hear it on the recording, the crowd noise really comes through at times. No more so than on the Goldie set – I remember it well, it might have been about 3am and Goldie started with The Helicopter tune. I was too pissed to even realise what the chopper rotors sample signalled and was on my way to the bar. When it dropped the mission to the bar was quickly abandoned as I rushed back to the dancefloor. You can really hear the crowd when it drops, I get goosebumps as I reminisce on that.

Grooverider was a nice surprise too, as although it wasn’t exactly a speed style / Logical Progression set, he played some real tough 90s D&B to change the pace a little late on.

I have said numerous times on here that I was too young to hit the raves in the 90s, so I can probably say out of all the raves and club nights I have been to since  I started in 2001, this night probably had the most vibes, the best crowd, the best atmosphere.

It also reminds me what a loss it is for Good Looking and LTJ Bukem to no longer have MC Conrad as a part of the GLO stable. I’m not exactly sure what happened but word is they have fallen out and are not likely to reconcile. Part of the attraction of  seeing Bukem live was the fact Conrad was so unique and worked so well in combination with Bukem and the music. It appears that Good Looking may have owned the rights to the name “MC Conrad” so since the split Conrad goes by the name of Con*Natural. I hope they patch it up!

Goldie has just celebrated the twenty years in the game with the retrospect album ‘Alchemist’ and of course has been promoting it heavily on TV, radio and online. The highlight being his three hour interview / biography on Uncle Dugs’ Rinse FM show. Buy the album, no discerning junglite’s collection could be with out it.

All the Headz crew were recently interviewed for Red Bull music academy to tell tales of the incubator for all things Metalheadz. Regardless of whether you went to the sessions at Blue Note or not, this interview is a must read.
You really get a feel for how important the night was, not just for Goldie but the entire D&B scene as a whole.
I don’t think we have seen anything like it since, it helped drum and bass mature and reach new creative heights at a club where being different and playing something new was more important that playing it safe and spinning the same old anthems.

And dBridge’s excellent Exit Recordings has just celebrated its ten year anniversary, culminating in the hugely anticipated party at Fire, South London. I went to this night and yes it was busy as fuck and a bit hairy getting between rooms, but musically it was so on point.
Old skool sets from Fabio, Krust & Die and the best ’til last, Doc Scott.

Doc Scott’s set was the one I had been most excited for, he had spent the last week digging through old dubplates and teasing his followers with pictures of unreleased gems he has just knocking around.

Needless to say, the set was brilliant, as was the crowd. I heard to name a few, Unofficial Ghost VIP, Your Sound, Threshold, and of course the mad edit of Terminator which sent the place wild (the last tune, naturally).

With all this old skool excitement it was fairly obvious a mix would come of it. So I went for arguably the two most important figures in drum and bass history. Grooverider and Goldie.

It’s apparent that the Rider was a huge influence on Goldie, he says as much on the Rinse FM interview.
They draw a few parallels too; they are both huge characters, run (ran) hugely important labels, both produce alongside an engineer.. and both have created and remixed some amazing music.

For this mix I intended to pit some of the labels’ (perhaps) lesser played tracks against each other. But in the end it became impossible to ignore a few rinsed anthems, so in they went.

So in honour of Goldikus, Codename John and the King of the Rollers…..
