The next installment from, friends of Drumtrip, the “Long live beautifully crafted Jungle!” Facebook group comes via Flowah.

Volume 3 moves the series on a couple of years into rolling atmospheric drum and bass territory.

Smooth, rolling mixing in and out of classic tracks from the likes of  Nookie, Funky Technicians, PFM and Photek.

Watch out for a personal favourite of mine in there by Motiv One; Cosmik. Motiv One of course going onto record as the very different sounding Twisted Anger for Ray Keith’s “Dread Recordings” at the turn of the millenium.

Spinback and Quiff go way back to before the hardcore days when they met in the late 80s. It wasn’t long before Quiff AKA Q-Project jumped into the studio to release his debut EP entitled “Freestyle Fanatic” in 1992, which went on to be hugely collectable.

The duo come into their own the year later, when along with DJ Gwange, they set up Legend Recordings. A label that birthed a deep and dark drum & bass sound amongst the piano frenzied hardcore tracks of the time. One of the first releases was none other than the original mix of Champion Sound – one of the original drum & bass blueprint tracks.

Gwange suddenly left the label in 1994 and Legend disbanded. Q-Project and and Spinback when on to create their own label C.I.A. and became hugely prolific producing under the name Total Science. and occasionally ‘Funky Technicians’ for their more musical outings.

The rest is history. They are synonymous with drum & bass and have proven their ability to turn their collective hand to whatever style they like. True Legends, from beginning to end.

Anyway, they turn the clock back here with a mixture of massive jungle anthems, and a few gems to keep the heads interested.

The excellent use of a sample from the intro of Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes – Between Here And There combined with the use of effects gives the tune a jazzy/space-age feel to it.

The vinyl release had the equally good “Solar System” on the flip and can be bought for the bargain price of £0.86p on discogs! Both of these tracks were caned by LTJ Bukem at the time with The Instrumental featuring in his 1995 BBC Radio 1 essential mix.

The tune starts off with a extended intro that slowly builds up with pads and rides, which then falls into a healthy amen break that is sure to make you reminisce.

I managed to pick this one up completely by fluke, which ended up probably being one of my most interesting purchases without knowing.

Split Personality came out on Timeless in 1996, sounding very much like Source Direct’s ‘Exit 9’, very dark and eerie with cutting amens that give it a cold and really clinical sound.
This one is available from £1.99 on discogs, plus the b-side is the equally good but totally different sounding Time Step which sounds more like a Funky Technicians / Good Looking kind of tune.
