Hello there, it’s been a while. Sadly this isnt a triumphant return for Drumtrip, but I had to upload this DJ Crystl that forumite Stringz posted on DOA.

I’m a massive DJ Crystl fan and loved pretty much everything he put his hand to, so I always wonder what could have become of him if his album project on Payday would have been realised.

Anyway this is a great interview, and although I’m sure he might cringe reading it back today, it’s great to see the passion and his early attitudes to rave music (being a Hip Hop head originally).

If you’ve been following Drumtrip you’ll know I have knocked up a fair few all artist mixes over the years.

I’m aware that plenty of people are not really a fan of these types of mixes, thinking they are a bit lazy or obvious. I can understand that argument to an extent – it would be easy to just mindlessly mix a bunch of tunes by the same producer.

But a lot of the producers I love were / are capable of a huge range of styles. This means you really have to have a think about your selection and the progression of your mix.

When mixing I don’t plan out tracklists, but I do make a careful consideration before selecting my next tune. This, in my opinion, is one of the most important skills in DJing; being able to make a quick decision on what will go nice with your current tune, whilst setting up your mix for the direction you wish to take it in.

There is another reason I love an all artist mix. It fits nicely with my nerdy, and maybe slightly OCD tendencies for order within my collection. If I collect Source Directs back catalogue, I want to then archive in a series of mixes (and of course, listen to it myself).

Anyway, it occurred to me I have 20+ all artist mixes already uploaded to my Soundcloud account, so it made sense to add them to a playlist.

These date back about 10 years, with several volumes celebrating some really prolific producers. I think there are five Dillinja mixes alone, five Photek mixes and three Source Direct. There are also mixes documenting the works of more contemporary producers like Breakage and dBridge, as well as old favourites of mine like The Invisible Man, Adam F, Seba, Nookie, Crystl and Omni Trio.

Tracklists each mix can can be found within the description of the relevant Soundcloud page.

A man who lets the music do the talking, Wheeler comes with a atmospheric mid 90s selection which gets a little dark and aggressive towards the end. Personal highlights here being Krust’s amazing “Soul In Motion” and Digital’s “Lower Depths”.

The Facebook group recently grew to over 700 like minded members, so to celebrate Maph has put together “Beautifully Crafted Jungle Volume 1”. The first of what will hopefully be a regular mix series from Beautiful Crated Jungle’s affiliates and members.

As the group’s jungle tastes are so similar to ours, we are pleased to say Drumtrip is now affiliated with Beautifully Crafted Jungle and hope to come up with some collaborations on mixes and write-ups over the coming months!

To the mix; Maph opens with the utterly majestic Sweet Dreamz by DJ Crystl before digging deep with tracks from Peshay, Atlas, Aquasky and a personal favourite of mine by DJ Krust. Check it out.
Finding a few hours spare one Sunday recently I gave it a go and the mix below is the result. The mixing a bit off in parts as I (sadly) rarely play this sort of music any more but the tunes are all great.

So far the series has visited a lot of the smooth and atmospheric moments from 1994/1997 on labels such as Good Looking, Basement, Photek and more, mostly the more drum and bass styled productions after 1994s jungle explosion.

Volume 6 however goes back a bit further, this time the mix heads into darker, post-hardcore territory. Starting from 1993 we have early works from established producers such as Dillinja (under his Capone alias), Lemon D, Photek (as Origination and Code Of Practice), Fenturion (Adam F) and Dexxtrous (J Majik). Without meaning to, looking back at the tracklisting there is a lot of really well known producers here, under some very earlier pseudonymous. A personal favourite of mine is the Bay B Kane cut “Unfolding Perspective” which gets darker than night during the Diana Ross sampling breakdown.

Expect lots of resampled string sections and synths, muddy mixdowns, amens, sub bass and movie sample quotes.

Half of the selection would also be eligible for inclusion under our Bargain Jungle series, with several tracks like “Treat Me Right“, “Age Of Aquarius” and “Back To The Future Pt 2” all available for well under a fiver on Discogs.
