After a bit of a delay since the last sessions, Eazyflow hits us with #05. Taking you through some 1991 breakbeat influences – Some classic tunes that helped shaped his musical tastes, and drum and bass itself.

For my stint on the Sessions roster I decided to go way back to the rave era. However, with it being Drumtrip I didn’t want this feel like a ‘rave’ set (although there is a bit of that in there…), it’s more of a tribute to those early pioneers such as Rebel MC and Shut Up & Dance, who added the essential ingredient to house and techno that would set British dance music apart from its European and American counterparts – the breakbeats.

Before breakbeat music had established an identity of its own, producers were basically musical magpies stealing samples from anywhere they found inspiration. House, Techno, Dub, Reggae, Hip Hop, Electro, classical, Television, Children’s story books, movie soundtracks, Enya… whatever the fuck. If someone liked it, then it was going in. This was at a time before sampling was a big deal in legal terms, which was a good job since with the exception of a few synths nearly all early UK breakbeat tunes were built around samples of some sort.

In the book ‘How To Squander Your Potential’ Luna C writes about the legality of sampling and how it all changed around the time he found himself in some big trub with Columbia for sampling Sesame Street. If I could remember what the deal was I would have written about it here, but I lent the book out to someone about a year ago and typically still not got the damn thing back .

As for the mix I tried to showcase some different styles by starting with dubbed out stuff before moving into the more ravey and early jungle sounds. Some of the tracks show their age – NRG’s simplistic use of bleeps, breaks, and samples on the track ‘Terminator’ could have only ever been written in 1991 (…and that is exactly its appeal). Whilst others such as A Guy Called Gerald’s ‘Anything’ and Nasty Habit’s ‘Make Some Noise’ are fine examples of early proto-jungle that were light-years ahead of their time and still serve as a template for the modern day.

Hopefully you will find something to like in my early breakbeats mix, and will find it a worthy addition to the solid sessions already put forward by eXtreme, Law, DJ Jamie, and J Rolla.

A nice little mix here recorded back in 2006 alongside my good friend and longtime (though intermittent) mixing-partner-in-crime; Wheeler aka Double-V aka Clangmaster Flex.

We may well have been drunk when it was mixed together but most of the set is very passable.
What I love about this selection is nearly all of these tunes were purchased on Christmas eve for a pittance.
Around 2002 (we were 16/17 years old) on our travels around the local estate in the county town of Hertford we came across an individual desperate for some immediate cash in exchange for about 50 old hardcore and jungle tracks

Back then I wasn’t quite as clued up on my jungle history as today but Wheeler duly obliged and relieved the guy of his tunes, if I remember it was all for about £30.00 or so, a paltry sum of money for any batch of 50 records.

It was only a couple of years later we realised that value of some of these tracks, as well as over half the tunes featured in this mix, we also found the black press of Foul Play – Finest Illusion (for some reason I played the legal mix here) which I have seen fetch three figures.
One of my since personal favourites too; the Nookie produced Man Like Pennywise – Mystery, which is also worth a few quid, as well as the original press of Bukem – Atlantis and a fair few Moving Shadow bits.

One of the records had a logo on it we were already well familiar with, and it was that of local record shop Parliament Music which had been opened by Omni Trio around a decade earlier. Unbeknownst to me at the time Parliament ran their own label in the early 90s with Omni Trio heading it up and releasing several pre Moving Shadow tracks. The track in question was the excellent piano led slice of hardcore Pianism, under his Splice alias.

With eBay and online retailers you don’t get too many of these stories anymore, with people often far more enlightened about the value of their black plastic discs but I will always remember the day we came across that guy.

To the mix…

More 2 Bad Mice stuff, this time a mix and great write up courtesy of Fact Mag.

The mix encompasses pretty much everything about UK hardcore from 1990 to 1992 with a few huge anthems like The Bouncer, Bombscare, London Sum’ting and Compnded.

This time machine has been built for us by 2 Bad Mice, the original nutters whose early productions – produced in collaboration with Rob Playford – constitute some of early rave’s finest musical moments, and midwifed jungle into life.
